A number of parallel considerations influenced the idea for the creation of the field of pennies. Most important was the vision on an infinite outdoor "carpet" of coins that would be forever memorable - a celebration of Common Cents. Old expressions such as "Pennies from Heaven," "Streets Paved with Gold (pennies)," and "Penny Wise & Pound Foolish" came to mind. The idea (and attraction) of a New York City block filled with one millions dollars worth of real pennies was irresistible. Tons of these copper one-cent pieces collected by almost 900 public schools and are destined for dozens of charitable causes selected by each school.

The "common good" is the "common denominator." The common currency is the old fashioned Lincoln penny! And Common Cents is the sponsor.

This incomparably generous undertaking has Teddy Gross and his passionate staff to thank. The program managers, engineers, contractors, Rockefeller Center personnel and architects worked together in a collaborative fashion that would have shamed Santa's workshop. It has been a glorious adventure and one that will resonate in this and other cities for years to come.
