Location: U.S. office in Vancouver, Washington and a very small office in Vernon, British Columbia, Canada. Currently located in Pierre Payen, Haiti - about a one hour drive north of the capital city, Port au Prince.
Where we work in Haiti: From Port au Prince to the south of Pierre Payen and encompassing most of the Artibonite valley to the north
Issue Area: Health & Hygiene (Access to Clean Water) |
Who We Are Founding Story: Clean Water for Haiti was founded in 2001 by Tal and Adele Woolsey of Canada. It was founded to provide sustainable clean water solutions to the Haitian people. One of our primary goals is to provide Haitians with the dignity of choosing to make a better life for themselves and their families. The people who purchase water filters have made a choice to provide clean water for their families. Clean water can mean lower medical costs, fewer work days missed due to illness, and in many cases, lives saved.
Programs & Services We provide a method of clean water through the use of biosand water filters. The biosand filter is a form of household water treatment, which means that ideally each family has its own filter. The filters are effective no matter where families get their water from. In some areas of Haiti people get their water from rivers or broken pipes. Clean water can mean lower medical costs, fewer work days missed due to illness, and in many cases, lives saved. There are very few jobs available in Haiti. Our Haitian workers have been able to use the money they earn to put their children through school, put themselves through trade schools, and buy homes for their families.
How has the focus of your organization changed since the earthquake on January 12, 2010? We immediately increased production and began to install the water filters for free. We installed 380 filters in the month following the earthquake. These filters are now providing clean water to 4,000 or more people. Due to the disaster relief efforts, almost 300 filters per month were installed for January and February alone. At this rate, we believe we can consistently produce an average of 200 filters per month in 2010.
Grant Examples Your grant will provide clean water for people in Haiti by helping to build and install more biosand filters. $1,000 will fund for the production and installation of 20 biosand filters along with training and follow-up that will be provided in each community. Each filter will provide water for an average of 10 people, so 200 people could be given access to clean drinking water for every $1,000 grant we receive.
Partnership Opportunities Establishing a partnership: As a student, you will be able to correspond via Skype and e-mail to ask questions about water needs in Haiti and to find out how our organization is working to address those needs. Clean Water for Haiti would love to send video footage and photographs of the people that receive the filters funded by Penny Harvest students. We hope to create a connection between you, the Penny Harvest students and the filter recipients in Haiti that you have helped through your grant.
