BOWL-A-THON A HUGE SUCCESS!

June 22, 2007

Common Cents’ first annual bowl-a-thon, “Can you Spare a Penny?” was a huge success!  Nearly one hundred Penny Harvest supporters, including program alumni, teachers, friends and family, came together at Leisure Time Bowl on Tuesday, June 12th to raise $23,000 for the New York City Penny Harvest.

The King's Pin'sThroughout the night, participants demonstrated their support for the Penny Harvest by showing off their bowling skills, enjoying pizza with new friends, and trying their hand at some good (but rather difficult!) trivia.  In matching green and white Common Cents’ t-shirts, teams competed for two honors: the highest bowling score and highest fundraising total.  Top honors for both prizes went to the King’s Pins (pictured), whose team raised $5,255! For their accomplishment as the team with the highest bowling score, Common Cents board member Jim McGinnis donated an additional $1,000 in their honor.

The bowling alley was filled with many long time Common Cents supporters, as well as a lot of new faces.  Tom King, King Pin’s team captain, and an IT consultant in Manhattan said, “I was amazed to hear how many New York City children are involved in making a real difference in their communities with grants and service projects.  I will definitely be back next year – this is a terrific program to support, and a fun way to do it!”

Common Cents staff and Board were thrilled that so many people came out to support the students of NYC’s Penny Harvest, and are looking forward to an even more successful bowl-a-thon next year!
