COMMON CENTS PUBLISHES ANNUAL REPORT CELEBRATING STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

November 1, 2010

Common Cents is thrilled to announce the publication of its annual report which documents the accomplishments of the hundreds of thousands of students who participated in the Penny Harvest program last year, collecting and giving away $756.273.19 to charities.

Common Cents Executive Director Teddy Gross announced today the publication of the 2009/2010 Common Cents Annual Report which features young people making real contributions to their communities. The report reinforces the value of young people in the community. The Penny Harvest program is in almost 1,000 schools in New York City/ Metro NY; The Capital Region of NY; Ohio; Florida; and Seattle, WA.

During last fall’s annual Penny Harvest, students raised $756,237.19. After months of careful study and hard work, 12,250 student grant-makers sitting on 817 “philanthropy roundtables” made 2,278 grants to non-profits, such as women’s shelters, animal rights organizations, community gardens, and senior centers, and carried out 355 service-learning projects, such as block clean-ups and literacy programs. The Common Cents Annual Report contains a description of each grant and service-learning project and reflects a year of hard work by students to improve their community.

Mr. Gross said, "More than ever, schools are looking to us to help them bring out the best in children and provide opportunities for them to be active agents of change in their communities. Our 2009/2010 annual report is a testament to the many accomplishments of students who care deeply about their communities and are doing their best to make a difference."

For example, when deadly earthquakes struck in Haiti and Chile, students responded immediately by organizing fundraisers to help survivors of the disasters. Common Cents created the Haiti Relief and Recovery Fund, a “National Roundtable” which allowed thousands of students to come together with small donations from their Penny Harvest to make big grants to organizations responding to the emergency in Haiti. Common Cents partnered with four organizations working locally in Haiti, to receive the much needed support. Students from across the country worked together to decide how to distribute the money amongst each organization, designating over $28,000 towards recovery efforts in Haiti.

The 2009/2010 Common Cents Annual Report captures tangible change in every neighborhood where students Penny Harvest. The grants, service-learning projects and stories represent an important lesson for everyone: all children can contribute to the growth of their communities, and all communities must contribute to the growth of their children by supporting them to serve.
