Home > Former board chair John Hobbs dies
January 14, 2010
John Hobbs, a former board chairman of Common Cents died Jan. 3 of natural causes at his home in Charlemont, Mass. He was 73. He is survived by two daughters and a son.
John was an acutely intellectual man, with an untiring interest in creatively analyzing difficult problems – particularly the problems of human development, and of institutional development; and even more so, the problem of how the two interact. He was also an exceptionally kind and modest person.
This unusual combination of hardnosed intellectual passion and gentle compassion uniquely qualified him to lead our nascent board and organization to maturity.
John learned about Common Cents as a Trustee of the W.T. Grant Foundation, and joined the Board in 1998. He assumed its leadership shortly thereafter, a position that he kept until his retirement from Jenison Associates in 2005.
For six years, John gave Common Cents his all. Thanks largely to him, the organization and its flagship program, the Penny Harvest, were able successfully to make the difficult journey to maturity.
There is not a corner of our work at Common Cents that doesn't reflect John Hobbs’ ideas, and not a day that goes by that my colleagues and I are not grateful for what he taught and gave us all.
