Registration for the 08/09 Florida Penny Harvest is now open! To register, download a form (PDF) and fax a copy to 850-922-2928.

Students in Polk County had a successful Penny Harvest collecting $3,840 to support service-learning and student philanthropy programming to benefit their local community. They were recently featured on Bay News 9, click here for their story.  Additionally,  thank you to Mid-Florida Federal Credit Union for counting the coins and matching the student's harvest total by donating an additional $3,840 to the Polk County School District.

Joe Follman
Florida Learn & Serve Director/Florida Alliance for Student Service Co-Director

Joe serves as the Director of Florida Learn & Serve and as Co-Director of the Florida Alliance for Student Service (FASS) based at Florida State University. Florida Learn & Serve supports K-12 youth involvement in service learning, and each year 150 schools and 25,000 students participate. The Alliance includes Florida Learn & Serve, Florida Campus Compact, the FASS VISTA Initiative and the State Farm Home Safety & Service Learning Initiative; all FASS programs support service learning opportunities for K-12 and Higher Education students.

Joe has authored three books, "Learning by Serving," "Comprehensive School Improvement," and "Reducing School Violence," all have been placed in every public school in Florida. He also wrote "A Guide to Establishing Youth Service-Learning Councils" and currently teaches service learning at FSU. Prior to his career at FSU, Joe held such positions as the SERVE director of publications, multiple research positions and an intelligence specialist at the Defense Intelligence Agency. Joe received a bachelors in English from Emory University and a masters in English from the University of Virginia.

Laryn Flikkema
FASS VISTA Director/Florida Penny Harvest Program Coordinator

Laryn is currently in his fourth year as a staff member with Florida State University’s Center for Leadership and Civic Education. He serves as Director of the FASS AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative and as the Program Coordinator for the Florida Penny Harvest. He oversees education and structured service-learning opportunities for students that seek sustainable solutions to pressing social problems. Prior to his career at FSU, Laryn served for three years as the AmeriCorps*VISTA Coordinator for the 4-H Youth Development Program at Michigan State University. Laryn received his bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Science from Michigan State University and a graduate certificate in Public Administration from Florida State University.

Marianne Magjuka
FASS AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader

Marianne serves as the Leader of the Florida Alliance for Student Service (FASS) AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative, a program of Florida State University’s Center for Leadership and Civic Education. The FASS AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative places AmeriCorps members at K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and community-based organizations across the state of Florida. Marianne also helps coordinate the Florida Penny Harvest through providing training and school support statewide. Prior to joining the staff at FSU, Marianne taught social studies and English at Resurrection Catholic High School with the Alliance for Catholic Education, a service teaching and graduate program at the University of Notre Dame. Marianne graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 2005 with a B.A. in History. She received a M.Ed. in Social Studies Education in 2007.
