GATHER PENNIES

Your year-long philanthropic journey begins by organizing student leaders to mobilize the whole school to gather pennies.  These funds fuel making grants in the Philanthropy Roundtable and taking action for Neighborhood Service.

Skip down to:
  1. LEADING THE HARVEST
  2. HARVESTING PENNIES
  3. GETTING EVERYONE INVOLVED
  4. FINISHING STRONG
Building a caring community begins at home and with neighbors, and continues throughout the school. Begin by engaging your colleagues, your student leaders, the entire student body and their families in the Penny Harvest.

In this section, you will find:
  • Logistics about how the Penny Harvest works
  • Tips for working with your principal, your colleagues and student leaders
  • Self check to make sure you are ready to make the Penny Harvest happen!

REMINDER: The Gather Pennies phase of the year-long program takes about 9 weeks, beginning with preparation in September, attending professional development sessions in early October, then kicking it off for the whole school in late October.

Penny Harvest Leaders are the driving force behind the Penny Harvest.  Leaders will mobilize their peers while building leadership skills and easing your responsibilities as Penny Harvest Coach!  Your leaders have a very important role: they collect pennies in their neighborhood first, leading by example for the rest of the school.

In this section, you will find:
  • Tips to prepare student leaders to harvest first and inspire their peers
  • Penny Harvest Leader Permission slip to let families know about their child's honor

TIP: Hold regular meetings with your leaders.  Most schools meet before school, after school, at lunchtime or during the coach’s prep time.

REMINDER: Host the school-wide Kick off Assembly after you have attended a professional development session and student leaders have already harvested.

“When my kids explain [to neighbors] that the money we collect will be gifted to organizations of our choosing, they are demonstrating that they are selfless and it is important for their neighbors to see them as young leaders.”

GETTING EVERYONE INVOLVED:

HELPING EVERYONE TO HARVEST, EVERYONE TO LEARN

The Penny Harvest is for everyone—it’s a school wide program that involves every student in learning and harvesting.  Motivating each student to gather pennies, implementing a Penny Olympics, advertising the Penny Harvest and sharing Curriculum Connections with all teachers allows each child to participate meaningfully—     and of course, allows your school to accumulate enough pennies to beat the 25-sack challenge!

In this section, you will find:
  • Ideas to plan the Penny Olympics for some healthy competition
  • Strategies for sustaining momentum throughout the harvest
  • Curriculum Connections for all classrooms to    address the ‘teachable moments’ of the Penny Harvest
TIP: Hold weekly weigh-ins to track your school’s harvest total. Ensure every students has tools and take-homes to gather pennies in their neighborhoods.

REMINDER: Penny Olympics and the Curriculum Connections can occur throughout the gathering pennies period.  Have students gather pennies until Thanksgiving break.

“It is very rewarding to see the whole school come together in a friendly competition to raise money for a good cause.”

--Kathryn Reilly, Penny Harvest Coach, NYC

FINISHING STRONG: CELEBRATING SUCCESS, LOOKING TO NEXT STEPS

It’s time to reflect, recognize, celebrate and look ahead.  The “weight” of all the work you put into harvesting pennies will be lifted away as pennies are picked up.  A Tally Rally is a great for your school to come together once again and celebrate accomplishments, announce harvest totals, wrap up the Penny Olympics as well as reconnect on the purpose of gathering pennies—continuing into the Philanthropy Roundtable.

In this section, you will find:
  • Ideas to plan and host a Tally Rally and other recognition activities
  • Tips to prepare for penny pick up
  • Activities to transition to the Philanthropy Roundtable
TIP: Keep harvesting till your assigned pick-up date!

REMINDER: The Tally Rally can happen before are after your pennies are picked up in early December.

“At this point, they all understand service and philanthropy;
th
ere is no kid on the leadership team that is confused about
what the pennies are for.
It’s our job to build future philanthropists.”
--Deanna Belcher, Penny Harvest Coach, NYC
