EDUCATOR NETWORK LEADERSHIP TEAM

The Educator Network Leadership Team consists of 13 Penny Harvest Coaches with well over 50 combined years of experience coaching the Penny Harvest. These leaders represent 4 out of the 5 boroughs and come from all types of schools.

Elizabeth Schneider

Elizabeth has worked at PS 144 since 1998. She currently serves as the librarian and in 2000 took over as the Penny Harvest Coach. She has worked closely with Common Cents to develop the Educators Network and also sits on Common Cents’ NYC Advisory Board. Outside of school Liz serves as a coordinator for the Queens College Big Buddy Program. She also enjoys spending time with her friends and family, loves to attend Broadway shows, and tries to attend as many New York Mets games as possible!

Deanna Chappelle Belcher

Deanna Chappelle Belcher is the Penny Harvest Coach at The School at Columbia University in Manhattan where she is currently the Director of Financial Aid. This 08/09 school year is the school’s sixth year in existence and sixth year doing the Penny Harvest. Before founding and working for The School at Columbia, Deanna was a school counselor and teacher in Manhattan. Last year, she earned a Certificate of Excellent Practice in Service Learning from the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC). Deanna has two daughters and her oldest is participating in her second Penny Harvest this year.

Julie is a special education teacher at P.S. 15 in Red Hook, Brooklyn where she works with fifth graders in all subject areas in a 12:1:1 classroom setting. She received her B.A. from Indiana University Bloomington, in Special Education and started her teaching career at Fairview Elementary School in Bloomington, IN. She began teaching at P.S. 15 in 2001.  Currently she has a M.S. from Fordham University in curriculum and teaching, where she was an Ennis Cosby Scholar.  She also recently graduated from CUNY with departmental honors and holds an advanced certificate in supervision and administration. She believes strongly in the power of education and feels it is the vehicle for changing the world. Julie currently resides in Sunset Park, Brooklyn with her musician-husband and two dogs.

Brita Daemgen

Brita has been doing the Penny Harvest for nearly ten years. It was put in her lap one day and once she found it was more than just collecting pennies… she was hooked! Currently, the health/gym teacher at PS 116 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, she loves outdoor activities and just bicycled through Romania with a girlfriend.

Patricia George

Patricia has been a Penny Harvest coach for six years and has seen how it has empowered her students from year to year. She believes the lesson learned in the Penny harvest will influence her students for a lifetime. She currently is a Speech and Language Therapist and the advisor of the National Honor Society at her school

Laura Glass

Laura has taught French, Spanish and Latin at Russell Sage since 1978 and has been the Penny Harvest Coach for at least ten years. She can honestly say that she has learned something new every year!  She’s also the student government leader and the yearbook advisor, and the advisor of National Junior Honor Society (Arista -- Russell Sage Chapter).  In all these various roles, she sees the role that service plays in the lives of students. She states “young people want to help others, and often need only to have their energy and generosity directed and channeled”.  Laura loves helping to achieve that goal.

Originally from South Carolina, Ashley moved to New York to attend NYU. She graduated from the Steinhardt School of Education with a M.A. in Educational Theatre. She is a professional storyteller and stage manager for off Broadway and Brooklyn shows. She’s been teaching for eight years and wouldn’t do anything else in the world! The Penny Harvest has really helped her become a part of the NYC community.

Jane McDonnell

Jane started her teaching career in a Catholic school which gave her the inspiration for community service.  As she transitioned to the New York Department of Education (NYDOE) she has been able to sustain her work within the community due to the many hats she has worn in the last 32 years of her career. Every day brings new and exciting energy from her children and she feels blessed to have chosen this career. The Penny Harvest adds to the joy of her teaching days.

Tara McMaster

Tara has been teaching for 23 years and currently works in the PS 7 Library. She lives near her school and her husband works in the local firehouse.  She grew up in the same neighborhood therefore has a vested interest in seeing the students support the community. Her Dad is a wonderful role model who supports various organizations in this area, thus Tara remains actively involved in her community.

Anselm Scrubb

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Anselm has been actively working with children and young people since he was 17. He is a licensed teacher and school counselor has been serving in the NYDOE since 2000. Anselm has masters in Education and a bachelors in Psychology, and also is an adjunct lecturer at Brooklyn College. Married seven years and an active member of his church, Anselm still wonders what he wants to be when he grows up!
