Text of the Dear Colleagues Letter: October 2010 Dear Colleagues,
It’s Penny Harvest time! As you may know, our school is part of the 2010-11 Penny Harvest, a city-wide program that over 800 other NYC/Metro NY schools participate in to develop the civic and moral values of our students.
Every October and November for the last 20 years, schools, students and their families have worked together to harvest pennies in their neighborhoods. Once the pennies are gathered, student leaders meet weekly for several months to research community needs and decide how to allocate Penny Harvest funds – usually $1000 – to community service projects and charitable organizations of their choice.
In 09/10, close to half a million students in 755 schools in NYC harvested $397,501.29 to give back to their communities as 1,352 cash grants to organizations and 224 neighborhood service projects.
As a NYC Service partner, the Penny Harvest fulfills the “Service in Schools” initiative to support service opportunities in our school. Our participation in the Penny Harvest will not just meet the new mandate; it will help continue to develop a culture of service in our school and highlight our school’s already impressive philanthropic efforts.
Your students have a great opportunity to make a difference. So do you.
Throughout the year, myself and Penny Harvest Student Leaders will provide you with information about the Penny Harvest and materials to pass on to your students. You also have the opportunity to maximize the ‘teachable moments’ of the Penny Harvest through Curriculum Connections, connecting Penny Harvest activities to academic standards-based lessons. Please let me know if you want to see any of the Penny Harvest-related lessons connected to math, social studies, ELA and other subjects.
And, of course, you can help gather pennies too!
The Gather Pennies phase of the year long Penny Harvest lasts from October 25 – November 24. We hope you motivate your students and their families to gather as many pennies as they can.
Every year, students involved in the Penny Harvest learn that they can get more done working as a team than working alone. That’s why we need your help to make this the best Penny Harvest yet!
Sincerely,
