R.E.A.P. the Benefits of the Penny Harvest Program

“It was a truly amazing experience to talk to these elementary school students...They were looking for solutions at such a young age and it was inspiring. I am in awe of their civic mindedness and encouraged to know that young people…are so willing to give of their time and energy to help others in need.”
 – Elizabeth O’Connor, Dome Project

When it comes to partnerships with schools, you get out what you put in. When you reach out to schools, students are likely to invite you to visit them. And when you visit, you have the opportunity to educate students (and receive grants!).  By appreciating their hard work, you’ll also experience many rewards, and you can look forward to a lasting partnership!

These tips will help you R.E.A.P. the benefits of the Penny Harvest. Although every partnership is different, this 12-month calendar gives you a rough idea of where these steps fit into the Penny Harvest year.

REACH OUT

• The best way to reach out to schools is to register on The Organization Finder, the online database Penny Harvest students use to find organizations to fund.
• Reach out to schools that have given you grants in past years.
• Take advantage of your organization’s existing connections to schools.

EDUCATE

• Offer to educate about your work by visiting a school or hosting a site visit.
• Work with other departments to determine the best person to present.

APPRECIATE

• Attend a check presentation at the school to thank students for their contribution.
• Send a “Thank You” note to the school explaining exactly how the grant was used.
• Tell the entire community about your partnership, including Common Cents. A Penny Harvest grant is a great story for your donors and local media. Your stories are our stories so make sure to share them with us so we can share with our donors and stakeholders.

PRESERVE

• Engage students in direct service opportunities which will enrich their educational experience – and provide you with needed help throughout the year.
• Hold a workplace harvest in the fall to contribute to the Harvest.
