18th Annual Penny Harvest Kicks-off!

Neighbor HarvestingOctober 27, 2008 - Starting this week, over 1,000 schools nationwide - and nearly 500,000 students - will be scouring their homes and neighborhoods for idle pennies. From now until Thanksgiving, students will connect with their parents, friends, and neighbors as they go in search of pennies.

These young Penny Harvesters will collect millions of pennies, literally creating their own philanthropic bank account at each participating school. Students will use one hundred percent of the funds they collect to make grants to non-profit organizations of their choice.

Support Penny Harvesters!

  1. Save your pennies in case a Penny Harvester comes knocking on your door. If you have pennies you’d like to donate contact us.
  2. Don’t live near a Penny Harvesting school? Find out how to enroll your local school in the program. The extended registration deadline is November 7th.

The Penny Harvest is a national program, run in the Capital Region of NY; Colorado; Florida; New York City/Metro NY; Seattle, WA; as well as individual schools across the country. Common Cents is proud to acknowledge our 08/09 partners who bring the Penny Harvest to their local communities.

Common Cents prepares teachers for the Penny Harvest

TrainingA group of teachers huddled around a lunchroom table, magic markers sprawled out between them. They spoke seriously, their brows furrowed in concentration.  They picked up markers and scribbled down a word, and then underlined it twice. Words like: “lack of self-confidence,” or “apathy” or “no motivation.”

These teachers were discussing something near and dear to their hearts—their students. They were sharing the biggest barricades to academic achievement their students face, and trying to brainstorm ways the Penny Harvest can help resolve them. They were asking questions like: “How can we build a student’s self-confidence?” or “How can we combat apathy in the classroom?” Or maybe, “How can we motivate students to become leaders?”

These were the sort of questions discussed among new and veteran Penny Harvest Coaches at the October 17th Professional Development Training Session, one of 11 held by Common Cents this October. At each session, Common Cents trains and prepare nearly 1,000 Coaches for the year ahead. We also do a lot of listening, to gather valuable feedback and fresh opinions from the Coaches themselves.

Common Cents and Cole Haan celebrate coaches

You always hear us talk about the 500,000 students who participate in the Penny Harvest, but the unsung heroes of the program are the nearly 2,000 teachers and principals who bring the program to life in schools for these young children.

On October 16th, Common Cents paid tribute to our Penny Harvest Coaches with a kick-off party. The party also served as a chance to celebrate the partnership between Common Cents and Cole Haan, our new corporate sponsor, and to honor members of the Decade Club, Coaches who have been involved for at least 10 years. More than 300 Penny Harvest Coaches and principals gathered at Cole Haan’s Rockefeller Center store, and we stopped to talk with some of them about their experiences with the Penny Harvest.
