What would you do with $800,000?
This fall, as politicians, corporate CEOs, and the media scrambled for answers and antidotes to the financial crisis, children were knocking on doors and collecting idle pennies from family, friends and neighbors for their own philanthropic purposes. Despite the current economic meltdown and lowered expectations about philanthropy nationwide, Penny Harvesters across the country bucked this trend and collected nearly $800,000…one penny at a time.
From now until April, Penny Harvesters have the unique challenge of deciding how to best use these funds. They will assess community needs, conduct interviews with non-profit leaders, and make tough decisions. Who will receive a Penny Harvest Grant? Where will they volunteer their time? Stay tuned to find out what decisions these young philanthropists are going to make this year.
Your VOTE Could Help a Penny Harvest School Win $500
Two Penny Harvest schools were nominated for the 2009 We Are A Solution: Youth Changing the World through Service-Learning Multimedia Showcase sponsored by The National Service-Learning Partnership.
Step One: Before voting, review their entries:
- Student leaders at The School at Columbia University in NYC created this video to inspire their peers to donate pennies.
- Students at A.D. Henderson University School (4th and 5th grades) in Boca Raton, FL created this PowerPoint Presentation describing their year-long Penny Harvest Journey.
Step Two: Vote! Click here to cast your vote by Tuesday, February 24, 2009…and one of these schools could win $500!
Creating Citizens, Building Leaders
The staff of Common Cents are constantly supporting – and advocating for - the efforts of Penny Harvesters. These are just a few highlights from the past weeks:
- Advising City Hall: On February 2nd, Executive Director Teddy Gross represented Common Cents and the ½ million children of the Penny Harvest at City Hall for a meeting to discuss how to engage youth in Mayor Bloomberg’s call for city-wide service. Click here to read more about this.
Training Penny Harvest Coaches: This January, we held 11 professional development sessions in each of the 5 boroughs, spending over 70 hours training nearly 400 educators on philanthropy and service-learning. And across the country, our partners in Albany, Columbus, Denver, Orlando and Seattle were providing the same support to educators in their cities. “I always love to come to these meetings and get re-energized. I always come away with one or two ideas from a fellow coach that I cannot wait to go back and implement them.” Sandra Leahy, Penny Harvest Coach, PS 203, Queens
Engaging the media: On February 12th, Executive Director Teddy Gross was interviewed by NY1 at Reaching Out Community Services, a food pantry in Brooklyn that was saved by Penny Harvest grants. See the story here, as well as all the other press we’ve recently received.
- Bowlin' for Change!
On February 10th, over 100 supporters of Common Cents gathered for our third annual bowl-a-thon. To date, the event has raised over $22,000 (which is enough to cover the costs of running the program in 44 schools!). The Penny Harvest is provided to each of the nearly 900 participating schools in New York at no cost thanks to donors like you.

Celebrating Parents: This fall, we had our first ever Family Bonus Contest challenging families to work together to collect pennies. Schools that had the highest percentage of parents participating earned an additional $250 for student grant-making. Click here to see the wining schools and learn more.
