Common Cents joins Service-Learning Leaders at Summit

Photo credit: Diane BondareffServiceNation is a national grassroots campaign working to inspire widespread public support for a national service act to encourage all Americans to step forward and take the lead in bridging our divides, strengthening our communities, and building a more vibrant democracy.

The campaign was launched in New York City on September 11-12, at the ServiceNation Summit, where leaders across every sector of American society joined hundreds of thousands of citizens to call on the next President and Congress to create a new era of service and civic engagement in America.

Executive Director Teddy Gross and New York City Penny Harvest Program Director Adam Seidel represented Common Cents at the event.  “It was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of this national dialogue on service.  I felt proud to represent the 500,000 Penny Harvesters who are already doing so much to serve their communities,” said Adam about his participation.

Teddy Gross, executive director of Common Cents, wrote a short analysis on one significant omission in the current ServiceNation plan:  service by children. Click here to read Teddy’s comments.

Let’s ensure that the voices of young people who serve their communities are not lost in this dialogue!

You can find out how to get involved in ServiceNation by clicking on the Take Action section of their website.  Two easy things you can do right now are:

1) Sign the Declaration of Service
2) Tell Your Story and share your story of service as a Penny Harvester, a Penny Harvest Coach, or a Penny Harvest supporter.

Common Cents launches Partnership with Cole Haan

Cole HaanCommon Cents is proud to announce our new corporate partner, Cole Haan.  As part of Cole Haan’s 80th anniversary and the “reimagining” of their penny loafer, they have pledged $1 million dollars of support for Common Cents over the next three years. Cole Haan is kicking off the partnership with in-store “penny drives” from October 10-19 in all of their retail and factory stores.

Consumers who bring in their pennies during these dates will receive a 20% discount, and Cole Haan will match all donations – penny for penny – to support Common Cents’ efforts to educate children about philanthropy and service throughout the country.   To participate in this campaign and find a Cole Haan store near you, click here.

The Mets Hit homeruns for Common Cents

Over the weekend of September 12-14, for every homerun hit by a Mets player at Shea Stadium Common Cents received $250.  Since the Mets hit 5 homeruns, we received $1,250!  This was part of the AIG Homers for Kids program, which supports youth charities that benefit the children of Queens, New York.  Go Mets!

Volunteers package Penny Harvest program materials

Common Cents VolunteersOver the weekend of August 22-24, nearly 200 Common Cents volunteers gathered at The School at Columbia to assemble 4,355 boxes of Penny Harvest program materials in preparation for the new school year. The kits included Penny Harvest curriculum, penny bags and the other materials needed by 500,000 students across the country for a successful Penny Harvest year.

This massive volunteer effort is critical in ensuring children have the opportunity to solve real-life community problems, all while learning lessons that will last them a lifetime.

Thanks again to the many volunteers who helped, and a special thanks to the volunteer teams from Con Edison, Katzenbach, National Association of Black Accountants and New York Cares.
