Celebrating The 07/08 Penny Harvest!

How the children spent their pennies:

As another year at the Penny Harvest comes to a close, we take a moment to review a year of extraordinary student grant making and community action.

Students from the Capital Region of NY; Colorado; Florida; Nashville, TN; New York City/Metro NY; Seattle, WA; and select schools across the country impacted their communities as they transformed idle pennies into philanthropic dollars.

In order to ensure Penny Harvesters enjoy a rich service-learning experience, Common Cents supports coaches and students in a wide variety of ways:

Long Island Penny harvest School recognized as "Above and beyond" by ABC News

WT Clark TeamWhat happens when you put together 682 pounds of pennies, a committed teacher and a group of dedicated Penny Harvest students? At W.T. Clarke Middle School in Long Island, the answer is $200 to fund Juvenile Diabetes’s research, $200 to help a local bereavement center, a food drive for the local food pantry, and even two goats and a flock of chickens for a family in Africa.

Under the guidance of Penny Harvest Coach Debbie Marks, students at W.T. Clarke have been gathering pennies, making grants and taking action through the Penny Harvest for the past seven years. And this year, in recognition of the impact they are making, ABC honored Debbie Marks and W.T Clarke with their annual Above & Beyond award for inspirational teachers, students and schools.

W.T. Clarke was one of four honorees chosen from out of the nearly 700 nominations in the tri-state area. As part of this award, W.T. Clarke’s Penny Harvest story was showcased in a half-hour special on ABC-7 News, on the Above & Beyond website, and also in a series of vignettes airing throughout the month of June.

Congratulations Debbie and W.T. Clarke!

Common Cents recognizes extraordinary schools

We are pleased to announce that 26 New York City Penny Harvest schools have earned the honorable distinction of 07/08 Penny Harvest Schools of Excellence. This award is an annual distinction earned by a select group of New York City schools that have demonstrated their commitment to and understanding of all phases of the Penny Harvest: Gathering Pennies, Making Grants and Taking Action.

Schools of Excellence exemplify the very best of the Penny Harvest, ranging from student leadership teams that engage the entire school and wider community, to creating opportunities for students to hone their teamwork, communication and leadership skills.

Congratulations to the students, coaches and principals for this accomplishment, and congratulations to the additional 14 finalists who were recognized as runners-up and honorable mentions!
