The Penny Harvest thrives because of dedicated coaches in each school. The traditional dynamic between educator and student is flipped as both come together through collaboration and discovery in real-time of their current surroundings. Coaches empower a team of student leaders to lead and engage their school community. They spearhead the program, working closely with their principal, colleagues and support staff.
The students do the work, make the decisions and drive the program; your role as Coach is to guide them and make their work possible.
Each year Coaches report how they enjoy watching students cross generational lines, interact with community leaders, and broker important changes in their own neighborhoods. Best of all, you will feel a sense of freedom and flexibility unusual with most programs. The Penny Harvest is not only easy for the children to understand, but it is also easy for you to initiate, and it allows for many different paths to success.
Penny Harvest activities teach students the value of their voice and contributions in society, the power of community, and how to develop positive relationships within the context of their core studies in math, science, English, and history.
Common Cents provides all of the tools and support to make the program come to life in your school and meet academic outcomes. Dedicated Penny Harvest School Support Fellows partner with each Coach to adapt the program model to support the Coach’s primary role and their unique school culture by helping to implement the activities that will support and enhance core instruction.
